In September 2023, the Colorado Attorney General announced that Mile High Psychiatry agreed to pay $1.9 million to resolve allegations of double billing Medicare and Medicaid from 2017–2021.
This landmark case was made possible by Therassistant’s founder, Krystin M. Butler, CRCR, CSPR, CSMC, who served as compliance manager at the time and filed the whistleblower complaint under the False Claims Act. The investigation confirmed improper billing practices, including double-charging for evaluation/management and psychotherapy services on the same visit.
Her actions returned nearly $2 million to public programs designed to support vulnerable populations.
“Our office will continue to work to protect taxpayer funds by holding healthcare providers accountable when they overbill federal healthcare programs. We are grateful to the whistleblower in this case, whose courage and commitment brought this matter to our attention.”
“Integrity isn’t optional. Standing up to protect the system—and the people it serves—is at the heart of Therassistant’s mission.” — Krystin M. Butler, Founder & CEO, Therassistant
